Rev. McCalla was ordained on July 31, 1994. On the following day he answered his first call as the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Corry, Pennsylvania. His next posting was in Franklin, Pennsylvania.

He accepted the call to Hoge in 2002. In 2004 he took another position at Highland Presbyterian Church in Huntington, West Virginia.

Rev. McCalla was an avid shooter. On Saturday mornings he would go to the gun range at the Beechfork Wildlife Management Area to shoot his weapons. On one such morning he was shot and killed by two men intent on robbing him for his weapons. He died July 19, 2008.
